Decorating on a Budget

You don’t need to spend a lot of money decorating your kids bedroom to give it a new look. Especially if you are a little bit creative and use your own talents to shop smart, paint or sew to give your child’s room a total new feel. Here are some tips to help you decorating on a budget.

Paint

Painting the walls will give the room an instant new look and feel, and it could be fun to involve your child when choosing a color for his or her bedroom. A good paint job with expensive paint could last for years, but by using an inexpensive paint that you could pick up from one of the many discount paint stores will permit you to change the room as your child grows.

Fabric

If you are handy with a sewing machine, or someone in your family is, you could save lots of money by buying fabric from discount stores and to shop during sales and stitch your own pillow covers, curtains and valances. Choose fabric that fits with the color of the walls, or try and find some with animals, your child’s favourite cartoon or theme to dress up windows or make some pillow covers to throw on the bed and liven up the plain bed sheets.

Furniture

Look for flea markets, online market places or even ask friends and family if there is any furniture they would like to give away. With a little bit of effort you could convert a old dresser into a new piece that suits the look and feel of the room by sanding it down and giving it a coat of paint and new drawer pulls. You could do the same with other used furniture like tables, wardrobes, or even refurbish chairs with some paint and fabric to match the rest of the room. Other ways to decorate furniture is to decorate them with mosaic, sea shells or stickers to give them a second leash of life and fit in with the room decor.

Lighting

Lighting is a great way to decorate a kids bedroom as bedside lamps and night lights are budget conscious and come in all different colors and cartoon characters or animals to suit the theme. These lamps are also easily replaced as your child outgrows that stage. Another great way to decorate a kids bedroom is to add Christmas lights or any lantern stringed lights alike which are cheap but are great to decorate a fairy or space themed room.

Wall art

To make the bedroom unique and add a theme you could find brightly colored posters or frame images or photo’s to brighten up the walls. Another great and easy way to decorate the walls is to use removable wall stickers or stencils which come in many different colors, sizes characters and themes. If you do have some fabric left over, you could make your own wall art by stretching it over a canvas attach it at the back of the canvas and hang it on the wall to make the theme complete.

Here is a great example of a kids bedroom make-over, as you can see, all it takes is a little bit of effort and creativity. Whatever age your kids are, decorating on a budget will go a long way and your kids will love it!
